Scott Hardie: “It ruled.”

I found one! There is a good H.P. Lovecraft movie after all. For this to happen, apparently it had to be made by fans rather than Hollywood studios: This 45-minute feature was created by the Lovecraft Historical Society. The 1920s-style silent-film treatment masks the tiny budget effectively, and the movie delivers decent special effects when they matter. Mostly this creepy film excels at suggesting how a man really could go mad from studying the occult, and tying Lovecraft's ideas together in the closing scene. It does suffer a little from Inception-like story-within-a-story-within-a-story-itis, but that's a quibble with the original tale. For non-fans, this is an excellent way to sample Lovecraft's work and gain an understanding of his key ideas and themes in one sitting. For fans, this is a treat.
