Scott Hardie: “It ruled.”
I read online that J.J. Abrams wanted to make a coming of age movie and a sci-fi movie and decided to combine them with this project, but judging from the result, the former idea was more compelling to him. This movie goes to such lengths to develop the relationships between the various kids, and was lucky to cast young actors with such good chemistry, that the occasional sci-fi scenes become an annoying distraction from the much more interesting drama in the foreground. It's the opposite of how this kind of movie usually turns out. I'm not clear about the logistics of the ending (how certain events happened), but it doesn't really matter; I watched it with a happy smile on my face. The movie urgently needs an epilogue showing more of the kids, but makes up for it with one of the best closing-credits easter eggs I've ever seen.
