Can also be used to help withhold information when being interrogated. specializations: Drugs, Physical, Psychological Interrogation is taken by this character: Elise LeBlanc, level 1, Psychological optimal stat: Soul 1 point per level The ability to convincingly project a "tough" image. A successful roll means that someone witnessing your performance is convinced that you mean any threats you make. How they react after that will depend on how tough they are themselves in relation to the kind of threat you present - they may respond with respect, fear, hatred, or amusement. The GM should modify any rolls based on the credibility of the threat the character can present compared to the position of the person threatened. specializations: Business, Political, Street Intimidation is taken by these characters: Alexandria Knight, level 3 Elise LeBlanc, level 1 optimal stat: Mind 3 points per level Reflects an aptitude for languages and their historical usage. Each specialization is a separate language that the character speaks. (Every character can speak their own native language for no point cost.) Roll on the skill whenever the character attempts to to say something difficult or complex, or to be eloquent. specializations: any specific language Languages is taken by this character: John Sheppard, level 1, Hieroglyphics in Mayan, Egyptian, Olmec, Cretan, and forms of Sankrit optimal stat: Mind 3 points per level This skill reflects knowledge of legal procedure and practice. Anyone with level 3 or higher has a license to practice law. In addition to lawyers, many police officers and politicians have this skill. All specialties (except International) are specific to the character's home country or region only. specializations: Civil, Criminal, Customs, Family, International, Political optimal stat: Body 1 point per level The ability to perform feats of strength with minimal chance for injury. Includes lifting or pushing heavy objects, stopping objects in motion, and supporting large masses. specializations: Bulky Objects, Free Weights, Humans, Moving Objects, Small Objects (hand-held) optimal stat: Mind 3 points per level The ability to maintain, repair, or build mechanical devices. This also includes knowledge of tool use, welding, et cetera. Use Artisan for archaic weapons. specializations: Automotive, Gunsmith, Locksmith, Machinery, Traps optimal stat: Mind 4 points per level This skill reflects knowledge of how to heal the human body. A typical general practitioner would specialize in Diagnosis, while most police officers or nurses would specialize in Trauma Care. When a practitioner succeeds in emergency treatment of a victim with this skill, the victim regains 2D6 health points, plus the number by which the practitioner made the roll. However, the practitioner must have adequate medical supplies, and only one roll may be made on the victim until he or she is injured again. specializations: Acupuncture, Dentistry, Diagnosis, Homeopathy, Pathology, Pharmacy, Surgery, Trauma Care, Veterinary optimal stat: Body 2 points per level The ability to attack effectively with a hand-to-hand weapon. specializations: Ax, Baton/Club, Knife, Improvised Weapons, Polearms, Sword, Whip/Chain Melee Attack is taken by these characters: John Sheppard, level 6 Lawrence Tate, level 4 optimal stat: Body 2 points per level The ability to defend well with a melee weapon. By acquiring different levels of the Melee Attack and Melee Defense skills, a character's personal style can be simulated. For example, a conservative fighter would have high levels of Defense, while an aggressive attacker would specialize in Attack. specializations: Ax, Baton/Club, Knife, Improvised Weapons, Polearms, Sword, Whip/Chain Melee Defense is taken by these characters: Alexandria Knight, level 2 Gao, level 1 John Sheppard, level 4 Lawrence Tate, level 2 optimal stat: Mind 3 points per level The character has military-style tactical, staff, or leadership training. In addition, SWAT (or other tactical police units) often include individuals who pick up similar skills, and often recruit ex-military personnel. specializations: Hardware Recognition, Intelligence Analysis, Logistics, Strategy, Tactics optimal stat: Soul 4 points per level This skill pertains to the variety of forms of music. The character may play one of more instruments well (each is a separate specialty) at the stated level. Make a check whenever a precise (or otherwise desired) performance is required. There are two other specialties: Read Notation, since many people can play an instrument without ever seeing sheet music, and Compose, which is used to create new music. specializations: Compose, Read Notation, any instrument optimal stat: Mind 1 point per level The ability to read maps or use specialized navigation equipment like a compass. This skill will help a character find the fastest and/or safest route to a destination. It also covers drawing a map. specializations: Air, Highway, Sea, Urban, Wilderness Navigation is taken by this character: John Sheppard, level 1, Interpretations of modern and ancient maps optimal stat: Mind 5 points per level Knowledge of the arcane and mystic arts, and their application in both historical and modern society. specializations: Astrology, Channeling, Numerology, Rituals, Spirits, Tarot, Voodoo, Witchcraft Occult is taken by these characters: Elise LeBlanc, level 2 Melchitt, level 1 optimal stat: Soul 2 points per level The ability to perform well before an audience. With the GM's approval, a successful check can temporarily increase the character's effective level in Art of Distraction by 1. specializations: Ceremony, Comedy, Dance, Drama, Impersonation, Public Speaking, Singing optimal stat: Soul 1 point per level The character is experienced at convincing other people to think something or do something that they normally wouldn't. The person being persuaded can attempt to resist with a Soul check if desired, and cannot be talked into harming themselves. This skill is essential for anyone in business or sales. specializations: Business, Political, Street Persuasion is taken by these characters: Alexandria Knight, level 5 Elise LeBlanc, level 2 Melchitt, level 4 optimal stat: Mind 4 points per level This skill involves not just the ability to take a good photograph, but a knowledge of cameras, lenses, shutters, bulbs, developing, printing, and other aspects of photography. (The "field" specialty is journalistic photography.) specializations: Artistic, Commercial, Field, Portrait optimal stat: Mind 5 points per level Scientific training in the way the universe works, including the necessary mathematical background. specializations: Astronomy, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physics optimal stat: Mind 4 points per level This skill represents the character's ability to recognize, concoct, apply, and neutralize a variety of poisons and toxins. specializations: Natural, Synthetic optimal stat: Mind 4 points per level This is the science behind police work. Criminology focuses on studies of criminal behavior and strategies, while forensics covers evidence-gathering. (In 1899, fingerprints were known to be unique to individuals but were only beginning to be used in forensics. No American police department recognized their value.) specializations: Ballistics, Criminology, Forensics optimal stat: Mind 5 points per level The ability to avoid ranged attacks. This skill does not enable a character to actually dodge bullets. Rather, it is a combination of situational awareness and tactical movement as well as knowing when to keep moving and when to drop for cover. specializations: Ground Vehicle, Personal (on foot), Water Vehicle optimal stat: Mind 4 points per level This provides the knowledge of religious dogma and ceremonial practice. Using the Performing Arts skill will allow the character to put on a good show during a ceremony, but only the Religious Customs skill provides the ability to do it for the intended religious effect. specializations: each religion is a specialization optimal stat: Mind 1 point per level This skill pertains to looking up information. The Interrogation skill is appropriate for getting information out of people; this is for getting it out of resources such as public and private libraries. The roll generally determines whether or not such a search was successful. (Bookkeeping refers to a company's financial records.) specializations: Bookkeeping, Library, News Archives, Private Collection, Public Records Research is taken by these characters: Elise LeBlanc, level 3 John Sheppard, level 6 optimal stat: Mind 3 points per level This is the knowledge of how to care for a riding beast, how to saddle and mount and dismount the animal, how to get it to perform difficult or dangerous maneuvers safely and without balking, and how to best pace it for long-distance rides. specializations: by species (horse, camel, elephant, etc) optimal stat: Soul 1 point per level A character with this skill is adept at exploiting his or her sex appeal. A successful skill check will convince another person that the character is genuinely interested in them. Whether or not the subject actually responds will depend on his or her own romantic inclinations and sexual preferences. specializations: Female, Male optimal stat: Body 2 points per level A character with this skill (also known as prestidigitation) has superior manual dexterity, greater than that represented by his/her Body stat. This includes the ability to perform "magic" tricks, palm small objects, cheat at cards, plant an item on someone, pick a lock, et cetera. specializations: Card Sharking, Lock Picking, Picking Pockets, Stage Magic Sleight of Hand is taken by these characters: Gao, level 1 Lawrence Tate, level 4 optimal stat: Mind 5 points per level Understanding of the way that people function in society, as well as societal behavior patterns. (Psychology and Sociology were both in their infancy in 1899 and were primitive compared to today's sciences.) specializations: Anthropology, Politics, Psychology, Sociology, Theology optimal stat: Body 1 point per level The ability to play well in a sporting event with specialized rules, either as an individual or as a member of a team. specializations: individual sports optimal stat: Body 2 points per level The ability to disguise objects or people so that they blend into their surroundings. This also includes the ability to conceal small objects on one's person and the ability to move silently. (See Disguise for specific impersonations.) specializations: Camouflage, Concealment, Silent Movement Stealth is taken by these characters: Elise LeBlanc, level 3 Gao, level 2 Lawrence Tate, level 2 Melchitt, level 2 optimal stat: Mind 1 point per level Regardless of the area, the ability to recognize elements of street activity. This is a vital survival skill for a person on the streets. specializations: Gang Activity, Influential Individuals, Territorial Markers Street Sense is taken by these characters: Alexandria Knight, level 1 Gao, level 2 Lawrence Tate, level 1 optimal stat: Body 2 points per level The character is skilled at swimming or diving. A swimmer can usually move at a speed equal to his or her Body in miles per hour. specializations: Competition, Deep-Sea Diving, Free Diving, Snorkeling Swimming is taken by these characters: Elise LeBlanc, level 1 John Sheppard, level 1 optimal stat: Body 2 points per level Accurate throwing of weapons or objects to hit a target. This can also include magical energy attacks such as fireballs.
